I have to apologize for starting another thread like this, but unfortunately what works best for some, doesn't work best for others. I am about to pull the trigger on 28" Roctanes but wanted to post before doing so.
So I posted a while back (and should update the thread) when I was looking for a mud-capable trail tire and chose the STI X LITE. I love that tire on the bike for the wet/muddy trails so much, that I want to replace my 27" Dirt Commanders for a larger tire and clutch the XP to handle both better. I like the extra clearance of the bigger tire, and the clearance around the calipers/rotors with the 14" wheels in the mucky trails I'm in a lot. I love my Dirt Commanders, the tread pattern and deep lugs bite great in the sandy, muddy, mostly loose terrain I ride, but it's time to move up. I would stick with them if they made a 28-30" size.
Moving on... Of course there's always talk of BigHorns, and I'm not opposed, tho I have no personal experience with them. I was a fan of the DC over BH because mine are more square/flat and thought they would handle better driving aggressively. Since I am wanting to clutch for both tires (will be dialing in the sport set, will 'lose' some power putting the X LITES back on), I started thinking about Roctanes as they run large (28=28.5), they are tough as nails and on the heavy side, and supposed to have deep lugs. Non directional is good, and they are very close in weight to the X LITES. Do you guys think this tire is the right or wrong choice? I will be running the sport tire on beadlocks and will be the tire I thrash the trails with. I really like the X LITES for the bite and larger size, but will use them a little less I think after having the new large sport tire. Seems like I always write a book when contemplating big (to me) decisions like this.
Wasn't considering Mongrels just because I don't think the tread would be ideal for my terrain (tightly spaced lugs). I did NOT like the BajaCross in the loose terrain I mostly ride...
Please, gurus, give some advice! Looking for tires true 28"-30".
