Garmin MapSource Topo poor forest road info !? ... missing something or alternative?

For the record, I have a Garmin 60CSX and an older Nuvi (just use it for street).

I do mostly dunes so really not using much of it capabilities in terms of maps. Doing more forest riding and trying to plan a route on forest roads for this weekend (30+ miles) with the MapSource software but the Garmin Topo map seems to have very few forest roads (just the major ones it seems ... and it does not label them with the road number on many) displayed on it. I have the US West Topo map selected, see elevations, streams, land marks, etc. but almost no forest roads. Am I missing a setting?

I just want to be able to see the forest roads and plan out a route to upload so I can try to follow it as I drive (fairly small displays ... especially the 60CSX which is what I will be using unless really need the Nuvi). A better alternative to MapSource?

Coconino Forest where we go has their map in a Garmin format but seems it is only available to upload their map directly to the GPS via a MapUpload Utility you download rather than send it into MapSource so that I can plot out a route as desired. I also don't even have the GPS with me so stuck from this perspective too.
